Village Projects:
The National Capital Region AIDS Memorial

Members from the Village, in conjunction with representatives from several HIV/AIDS partner organizations, are working on a multi-year public art project to design, create and maintain an AIDS memorial for the National Capital Region.

We envision a National Capital Region AIDS Memorial to honour and remember all those in our community who were lost to AIDS and who are affected by it. Our Memorial will be a sustainable monument, a place of serenity, beauty, reflection, and compassion that both remembers our losses and celebrates our living.

Mission:

To work with various stakeholders from the corporate, political, GLBT and HIV/AIDS communities to create a meaningful, respectful and dignified AIDS Memorial in the National Capital Region.

Values:

As members of the National Capital Region AIDS Memorial Committee, we:

  • hold in our hearts and value those who have not survived the AIDS epidemic;
  • believe in the importance of following generations to understand the impact of this epidemic on vulnerable communities;
  • are fiercely dedicated to honouring the compassion and courage of our community;
  • are open, respectful, and sensitive to the needs of the HIVAIDS community, both living and departed, and those affected by HIV/AIDS;
  • acknowledge that the early HIV/AIDS movement was also a transformative time of courage, growth, community strength and a rallying call for social justice and rights;
  • are unwavering in our commitment to create a beautiful, moving and accessible memorial of which the community can be proud.
